On the morning of September 17, 2013, an FHS student reported being followed by a large white four-door car (possibly a Crown Victoria) by a white man in his 50s wearing a dark blue shirt. He had gray hair and blue eyes.

One of the most spectacular things about this year’s DIFFA: Dining By Design Detroit, Sept. 26-28, is its location. This is the only time people will be able to party in the old Federal Reserve Building at 160 W. Fort St. before it becomes full time retail/business space.

Superintendent Gary Meier sent out a Back to School Welcome Letter, also posted on the Ferndale School’s website, which details some of those changes. These include increased breakfast and lunch prices, reduction in the availability of classes and activities, a switch to Common Core teaching standards, and changes to security protocols.

Dripping in sweat beneath body armor and masks, police from several cities moved deftly in tight formation through Jefferson Middle School in Pontiac, with guns drawn and eyes wide open. Following the sounds of a shotgun blast, they coordinated to clear the hallways and classrooms until they found their gunman hiding in a room with a chalkboard and empty desks. Back and forth gunfire ensured until the shooter, Ferndale Sgt. Dan Simon, fell to the floor.

Runners can take a brief pause at the Jackson Pollock-themed splatter canvas where they will be handed a brush and can give a quick flick. Multiply that by a few hundred runners and a community masterpiece is revealed. The DIY 5k “Art on the Run” and 1 Mile Fun Run has 7 different canvas themes and a few surprises too.

The Ferndale Schools Board of Education unanimously voted at their August 19, 2013 meeting in support of the retirement resignations to two of its top administrators, Henry Gold, Deputy Superintendent, and Barbara Evoe, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Councilperson Dan Martin was the lone voice on City Council advocating for the adoption of the citizen’s petition for an ordinance to decriminalize marijuana for people over the age of 21 possessing less than an ounce on private property. The matter came before council Monday after resident Andrew Cissell gathered enough petitions to have the ordinance considered.
