Runners can take a brief pause at the Jackson Pollock-themed splatter canvas where they will be handed a brush and can give a quick flick. Multiply that by a few hundred runners and a community masterpiece is revealed. The DIY 5k “Art on the Run” and 1 Mile Fun Run has 7 different canvas themes and a few surprises too.

Readers from all along the Woodward Corridor have shared their Dream Cruise memories, including Jim Thienel of Waterford who saw a pretty blue Mustang lose control and hit a tree near 19 Mile, and Ferndalian Tyler Beltz who captured Royal Oak Police dismantling a makeshift swimming pool in the back of a pickup truck.

The 9th Annual Green Cruise took place in Downtown Ferndale, with several bike rides, a green parade, and a slew of environmentally-friendly vendors and organizations lining E. 9 Mile Road. Bikes were a big part of the event, but so were other people-powered contraptions, such as skateboards and wheelchairs.

When over a thousand runners filled the streets of Ferndale last month for the Rainbow Run, it wasn’t just about a test of endurance and getting covered with multicolored cornstarch paints. The event also raised $6,600 that got divided among three charities.

The three month outdoor movie program begins in July on Third Thursday, July 18 with the screening of “Mama Mia,” the sing-a-long musical. A performing troupe from the Detroit Actors Theatre Company will help lead the sing-a-long. Showtime is at dusk.

Campers from the Kulick Center Summer Program joined the Department of Public Works and the Beautification Commission for the annual tree planting in the Arbor Day Forest at Oppenheimer Park on Tuesday. Two dozen youngsters aged 5-12 listened as Parks and Forestry Supervisor Shaun Slocum explained tree-planting basics. Then they dug in themselves, taking turns shoveling in the dirt needed to support the two trees they were adding to the forest.

Volunteers came together for two mass yard sales on June 8. The Trunk and Treasure Sale was held in the parking lot of City Hall, where vendors rented tables with the fees going to support Ferndale Recreation. Across the street at FernCare free clinic there was a yard sale of donated items, with proceeds helping provide health care for the needy.
