…gas chambers are still in use in four SE Michigan County-run shelters: Branch, Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties. Most shelters use lethal injection to put down sick or unadoptable dogs and cats.
The bill will now move on to the House of Representatives for a vote.

The City of Birmingham has adopted a new free speech policy to settle a federal lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberates Union of Michigan on behalf of an animal rights activist who was arrested while peacefully demonstrating on a public sidewalk outside a fur store.

Andy Didorosi, founder of the Detroit Bus Company, Paper Street Motors and other cool Ferndale-based projects, was honored Thursday at the Oakland County Commission meeting for another cool idea: providing air conditioning to a sweltering animal shelter.

This week’s featured fuzzy is an adult male cat who has been at the center for a while, patiently waiting for the right open-hearted person to take him home. Adult cats like Felix can make great companions.

The Ferndale 115 is helping to promote animal adoption in our community by showcasing an adoptable animal each week in a new section called “Friday Fuzzy.” This week’s lovable critter is a six year old Basset Hound/Beagle Mix named Sugar.

The founder and president of the Detroit Bus Company in Ferndale has donated a 20-ton portable air conditioning unit and diesel generator to the Oakland County Animal Control & Pet Adoption Center for the rest of the summer. Andy Didorosi, 26, asked Hertz Rental to deliver the equipment Friday. They worked with the county’s Facilities Management Department in the late afternoon to install it. The A/C unit will keep the dogs and cats at the Center cool on hot summer days.

After over a year of pushing for changes at the Oakland County Pet Adoption Center, citizens in the group Oakland Pet Advocates have turned up the heat by transforming their group into a political action committee taking aim at elected officials who do not support their demands for animal control policy.

Scores of fans will gather at the Ferndale High School football field on June 8, not to cheer their beloved Eagles on to victory, but in hopes that a cow will defecate in a lucky place.

The first resolution would have the Oakland County Animal Shelter save all healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs by the end of 2014.
The second resolution would require the shelter to post monthly statistics on the county website showing what happened to the cats and dogs that entered the shelter – adopted, returned to owner, euthanized.
The third resolution would require the shelter to first offer an animal to a rescue organization before they euthanize it.

Bipartisan spirit did not prevail at the Jan. 9, 2013 County Commission meeting when Republican Commissioners refused to consider discussion on the appointment of a new member to the Oakland County Zoological Authority, and instead approved a fifth Republican to hold the seat.
