In its second year, Clean the Ferndale Up brought over 80 residents out to do various clean up projects around the city. Focusing mainly on parks and major streets, teams picked up trash, raked leaves, and put mulch around trees.

The next event is on May 16, 2013 from 5:30 until 7:30 in the evening at the Kulick Center(registration and a light dinner begin at 5:00 p.m.).

Upcoming Relay for Life Fundraisers

The main event takes place June 8-9 2013, 10am-10am at Ferndale High School. Several teams walk through the day and night to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Cancer victims, survivors and caretakers are honored.

Leading up to the big day are several small fundraisers.

Memorial Mall Plans, New Parade Route for May 27

The Association is also involved with hosting the annual Memorial Day Parade. This year’s parade takes place on Monday, May 27 at 10am. Due to the West 9 Mile construction, the parade will go South down Woodward Avenue from Cambourne to W. 9 Mile, but will turn onto Allen and continue along W. Troy to the Memorial Mall.

Transgender Day of Empowerment at Affirmations April 27

The event takes place on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Affirmations Community Center in Ferndale. The Gender Identity Network Alliance (GINA) organizes the event. Various panel discussions, speakers, and a room full of tables with resources for transgender people, gender variant people, parents, doctors, teachers, activists, allies and people who simply want to learn more will be available. There will even be cupcakes from Cupcake Station and other food from Buffalo Wild Wings and Como’s.

The Day of Books and Roses brought Ferndale together in support of the Ferndale Public Library, and honored the legend of St. Jordi of Catalonia. On this day, lovers exchange books and roses and it is the number one day for book sales in Spain. The official day is April 23. Here in Ferndale it was celebrated on April 21, with food, wine, poetry readings and music added into the mix.

Mary Jo Foirth Gillett, Dennis Hinrichsen, Christine Rhein and D’Anne Withowski kept the crowd in awe with their verses. The event was sponsored by Springfed Arts and focused on Michigan poets.

Hosted by the Ferndale Area Chamber, this event brought people out to hear what’s going on around town. Coulter introduced new neighborhood programs, touted The Mayor’s Business Council, and explained some of the financial impediments facing the city.

The Complete Streets Initiative for the Woodward corridor was first announced in August, 2011 when the WA3 received a $752,000 Federal Highway Administration Grant to help Transform Woodward and prepare a Complete Streets Master Plan for the 27-mile Woodward Avenue.
