This time out, they are focusing their attention on pre-K – 12 education in Michigan. What’s working in your community? What needs reform? What ideas can you bring to the table? They are especially interested in talking with the CUSTOMERS of our education system: students, parents and families, and employers.

The event brought together musicians, artists, booksellers, poets and other writers. Attendees each received a used book from the Library’s bookstore and a rose.

Friends of the Ferndale Library and The Society of Sant Jordi invite the public to enjoy a full day of cultural festivities. Admission is $5 and includes a complimentary rose and used book from the Friends of Ferndale Library bookstore. Kids 12 and under are free. Proceeds from the event will go directly to the Library for community programs.

The Ferndale Environmental Sustainability Commission and the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority are combining efforts with that of the local business community to host the 4th annual Ferndale Green Week. The week of events are an opportunity for residents to not only celebrate Earth Day 2012 but also get to know some local businesses that are doing their part to help celebrate the earth year-round.

If Miriam Gershow made a bumper sticker it would say “Fiction Saves Lives.” The Berkley High graduate is the author of The Local News, a story about a teenager whose older brother went missing and how it affected her and her family. Gershow, who now lives in Oregon, came back to Michigan to do a reading from the novel at The Ferndale Public Library as part of their Ferndale Reads celebration.

The painting—created as an illustration for The Story of Hiawatha–is gouache on illustration board. Room was left in the lower right corner for text, which was written by Allen Chaffee as a retelling of the famous Longfellow poem. Published in 1951, The Story of Hiawatha features Sperry’s illustrations throughout and is currently out of print, though two copies remain in circulation at the Ferndale Public Library.

David Petersen is the award winning creator of the Mouse Guard series out with Archaia Entertainment. In 2007 David won the Russ Manning Award For Most Promising Newcomer and since then has continued to revitalize the fantasy genre in comics. As both the writer and artist for Mouse Guard, David approaches creating comics from every possible direction.

Miriam Gershow is a novelist, short story writer and teacher. Her debut novel, The Local News, was published by Spiegel & Grau in February 2009. It has been called “unusually credible and precise” and “deftly heartbreaking” by The New York Times, as well as “an accomplished debut” (Publisher’s Weekly) with a “disarmingly unsentimental narrative voice,” (Kirkus Reviews).

Schmidt gave examples of three types of cases, and explained the basics of each. Attendees learned about civil infractions, misdemeanors and felonies – and what to do if caught up in any of them.

Songs from the Moon and 3773 will play a set each on Fri. Apr. 6. Songs from the Moon will also be releasing a 7” at the show entitled Protest Strategies in two formats: CD and 7” with CD at The Ferndale Public Library (222 E. 9 Mile) beginning with doors open at 6:30 pm.

For the third year in a row, Go Comedy! is joining the Ferndale Library to celebrate Ferndale Reads with an original improvised production based on the library’s selected book, “The Local News” by Miriam Gershow.

“Our Kick-Off Meeting March 14 will give us an opportunity to explain our mission and vision very fully, and we are hoping for a large group of interested participants at that meeting. Personally, I’d like people to know that this is an opportunity to offer feedback in a positive, productive way for our schools.”

The Ferndale Reads 2012 Kick Off took place on Feb. 16 with local dignitaries on hand to do a reading of the first chapter. Councilperson Melanie Piana, Ferndale Area Chamber Executive Director Jennifer Roosenberg, FernCare President Ann Heler, and Treat Dreams Dreamologist Scott Moloney joined Library Director Kate Pohjola in the reading. Then dozens of people picked up free copies of the book.

Who says you have to be quiet in the library? On Fri., Mar. 2, 2012 The Ferndale Public Library (222 E. 9 Mile) places itself firmly in the loud camp as it showcases two local bands, Elemental and Bastion as part of its monthly First Stop Friday concert series. This concert is free and all ages are welcome.

Lisa J. Schmidt has been a criminal attorney in several counties and is a public defender in Oakland and Wayne Counties as well as representing private criminal clients. She urges the public to get informed about the criminal process. “You never know when you or someone you know may find yourself in an unexpected situation.

For the Feb. 12, 2012 forum on the school bond, Citizens for Quality Education Treasurer Bob Borkram discussed why he thinks people should vote for the school bond. Resident and occasional political candidate Tom Gagne spoke against the bond.

I heard a lot of great music that night, and it amazed me how good they were. I saw them again and then I picked up on other local music that I liked. I thought, hey, I like these songs a lot better than any national band. So I found a way to make it fit with library stuff.”
