The run starts at Affirmations Community Center on May 11 at 10:30 A.M. and has a $25 registration fee, which includes a t shirt and backpack. The run is approximately 5 miles long and people can run or walk to the finish line.

The event takes place on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Affirmations Community Center in Ferndale. The Gender Identity Network Alliance (GINA) organizes the event. Various panel discussions, speakers, and a room full of tables with resources for transgender people, gender variant people, parents, doctors, teachers, activists, allies and people who simply want to learn more will be available. There will even be cupcakes from Cupcake Station and other food from Buffalo Wild Wings and Como’s.

Playing with the pop-culture theme of James Bond’s 50th Anniversary, Affirmations is preparing for their large annual black-tie affair, the Spring Bash. This year’s theme is “Mission Possible” and their goal is to raise up to 10 percent of their general fund budget with ticket sales, auction items and other sponsorships.

Opening on Thursday, May 16, 2013, this show will feature a wide array of work by area artists. The Pittman-Puckett Curatorial Committee will select 40 to 50 selected works for group exhibition through July 11th, 2013.

Oakland County Clerk and former Michigan State Representative Lisa Brown also spoke at the event, discussing the recent wave of anti-women legislation in Michigan, including HB5711 which put severe limitations on abortion clinics. She explained how no women had been allowed to testify at the committee hearing where the bill was discussed, and how she was banned from speaking for a day because she used the word “vagina” when talking about it.

2012 was an exciting year for The Ferndale 115 News. In June we broke our record for readership, attracting over 10,000 unique visitors to the website. In December our count for the month was 26,142. Our stories now reach plenty of Ferndalians, as well as showcase our city to people beyond our borders.

In just its second year, Ferndale Pride was able to raise $10,000 to give to local charities. Michigan AIDS Coalition, Affirmations, the Dyke March and the Ferndale Community Foundation each received part of the $10,000 total.

Apalala, Cupid, Dorli, Hush Sarah, JA’s Sum, and Tristram are greyhounds that have been rescued from a harsh life of racing, that are now up for adoption. Motor City Greyhound Rescue picked up the emaciated pooches from one of their contacts down in Alabama. Underweight, bitten by ticks, and some noses rubbed raw from excessive muzzling, the creatures were clearly in need of care.

When two people seemed to randomly break out in a dance routine, people started to gather around. Music pumped out through speakers from Affirmations and suddenly people in solid red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple shirts emerged from the clusters of onlookers and began dancing as well.
