Thursday, May 17 with the official launch of its first on-street bike parking rack. The rack, designed and created by sculptor Richard Gage, will transform space to park one car into parking for 14 two-wheeled vehicles. It will be the first of six on-street racks the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority plans to install throughout the district.

The speaker will be Deborah Olson, executive director of the Center for Community Based Enterprise in Detroit. She’ll be talking partly about the history of cooperatives, and partly about the nuts and bolts of setting up a cooperative and making it successful.

Planning is still in the works, and new ideas are most welcome. Some of the choices so far include flower planting at Grant and Ferndale Middle School, grounds cleaning at Coolidge, trash pickup on 8 Mile, Hilton, Woodward and Livernois, and helping to clean up a County-owned vacant property.

The Ferndale Environmental Sustainability Commission and the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority are combining efforts with that of the local business community to host the 4th annual Ferndale Green Week. The week of events are an opportunity for residents to not only celebrate Earth Day 2012 but also get to know some local businesses that are doing their part to help celebrate the earth year-round.

It’s hard to picture Green Thumb Garden Center owner Kris Lieber donning a suit and punching a corporate clock every day, but that’s what life was like before he opened the budding garden supply business at 22963 Woodward. The 33-year-old entrepreneur used to be a clinical engineer responsible managing the Biomedical Engineering department at several hospitals for a large corporate health system.

The tour starts out in the education center, where youngsters hear a presentation about recycling, and watch a video about the process. Karen Bever, from SOCRRA explained that the more kids recycle, the more money the cities get back from the program. “It costs cities $26 a ton to take away garbage, but for every ton of recycling the city brings in they get a $37.50 credit,” Bever said.

The Boy Scouts went up against Motor City Free Geek to see which project would take home the money raised by the $5 door donations. Those who attended paid $5 and enjoyed two different types of soup, bread and salad. They listened to the presentations and used voting beans to select the project they collectively wanted to fund. Carol Czechowski of the Herb Society of America gave a whimsical presentation about the connections between fairies and gardens. Weaving traditional lore with practical gardening suggestions, Czechowski had the audience of plant connoisseurs making big plans about little things.

This month’s Charity is Ferndale Soup. The premise of Ferndale Soup is simple. On the third Sunday of each month, a bunch of people get together and each pay $5 to enjoy some soup (and other delicious food) and listen to presentations about projects that people would like to start. Then they vote on which project gets to take home the funding.

Last summer’s chicken coop discussions finally came to a vote at Monday night’s City Council meeting, with council voting unanimously to change the regulations and give potential chicken owners a framework to legally keep and house fowl on their property

Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan hopes to get about 30 volunteers to start. An initial organizational meeting will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Fire Station 1 (1635 Livernois) at 10 am.

Last summer’s chicken coop discussions are finally coming to a vote at Monday night’s City Council meeting. A proposed regulation change would allow residents to keep up to three chickens if they follow basic rules of care. Currently chickens are not expressly prohibited, but rules about the placement of coops mean that very few residents would qualify to build a coop on their property.

The new year is off to a great start recycling-wise as SOCRRA (Southeast Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority) is working with a record number of Ferndale businesses and increasing revenue brought into the City through recycling programs.
Colette Farris spent the last two months of 2011 amping up efforts to reach the business community.
