The opening is dependent on the complex licensing process, including having bottling labels approved, but they are aiming for Memorial Day. City Council approved a resolution in support of Schramm’s license at their March 11th council meeting.

Ferndale Rotary teamed up with Capuchin Soup Kitchen this year for their annual Winter Warm Up Soup Contest, held at Shriner’s Silver Garden in Southfield. The grand event featured soups from several local businesses as well as gourmet desserts and a large silent auction.

The Taco Bell at 21900 Woodward is closed so that owners can tear the building down and put a new one up. The project is expected to take approximately three months, according to site plans that were approved by City Council in November.

The Ferndale Education Foundation is having its annual fundraising dinner on March 15th, with an Ides of March theme, including a toga party! The cost is $40 and the event takes place at Club Venetian in Madison Heights. Guests should wear business attire or toga costumes.

The Winter Warm Up supports two charities, Ferndale Rotary’s Scholarship Awards program and Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Attendees will enjoy soups from all the teams and vote for which they like best. There will also be a silent auction, with many items donated by local businesses.

The Annual Rib Burn Off took place Feb. 2 with well over 1,000 people making their way to the big heated tent set up behind Dino’s Lounge. The event raised money for Ferndale Youth Assistance and Michigan AIDS Coalition. Eight teams of local business people competed for the hearts and taste buds of the crowd, serving up their own style of meaty BBQ ribs. Attendees paid $10 to sample ribs from each team, and voted for their favorite

There is a $20 cover charge for those guests and a minimum of 5 fashionable clothing items are needed to enter the swap. All door funds go to JFK’s PTA. Free mini services have been generously donated by local woman-owned businesses including make-up and nail polish changes by Rouge, chair massages by Essential Massage Therapy, henna hand art by Alchemy, hair by Flip. Psychic Readings are provided by Boston Tea Room for a nominal fee. Delicious desserts are provided by Pinwheel Bakery, Treat Dreams (our one male-owned business) and The Purple Kitchen.

With most wines priced under $15, and an obviously silly name, Winezilla is not the typical wine shop. However, it is quickly assimilating into the culture that has been coined “Ferndale Normal,” meaning that any place else it might seem strange, but not much is out of place here.

2012 was an exciting year for The Ferndale 115 News. In June we broke our record for readership, attracting over 10,000 unique visitors to the website. In December our count for the month was 26,142. Our stories now reach plenty of Ferndalians, as well as showcase our city to people beyond our borders.

The Ferndale Rotary held their annual pancake breakfast on Dec. 8, 2012. The event helped raise money for the many projects Rotary does. In addition to pancakes, breakfast-goers enjoyed a spinach quiche from Dino’s Lounge, sausage from Howe’s Bayou, and strawberry-banana cheesecake from Peteet’s Cheesecake.

With activities on both East and West 9 Mile, including a ferris wheel, ice sculptures, a vendor tent, carnival food, the festival is a great way to chase away the rainy day blues. Plus there are many shopping opportunities, which can be a great reminder to support local businesses.
