Family, friends and supporters of Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Leach gathered in Berkley on April 27 to honor his service by unveiling a memorial for him and a bench named for his son Jack. The memorials are at Berkley Legion at 2079 W. 12 Mile Road.

Four Ferndale students were among those who visited the County Complex on April 22 to learn about County Government through many activities including a demonstration from County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and words of advice from elected officials like Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. Youth in Government Day is a 33 year tradition.

The Complete Streets Initiative for the Woodward corridor was first announced in August, 2011 when the WA3 received a $752,000 Federal Highway Administration Grant to help Transform Woodward and prepare a Complete Streets Master Plan for the 27-mile Woodward Avenue.

The first resolution would have the Oakland County Animal Shelter save all healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs by the end of 2014.
The second resolution would require the shelter to post monthly statistics on the county website showing what happened to the cats and dogs that entered the shelter – adopted, returned to owner, euthanized.
The third resolution would require the shelter to first offer an animal to a rescue organization before they euthanize it.

“How many more times will we get something from our legislature that we can’t undo?” That’s the main question posed by Ferndale resident Bill Lucas. Lucas has started a petition to amend the State Constitution by striking out language that allows legislation to be referendum-proof if there are appropriations attached.

Playing with the pop-culture theme of James Bond’s 50th Anniversary, Affirmations is preparing for their large annual black-tie affair, the Spring Bash. This year’s theme is “Mission Possible” and their goal is to raise up to 10 percent of their general fund budget with ticket sales, auction items and other sponsorships.
