The new program that has Flores excited is the Oakland County Veteran’s ID Card. For just $10 a vet can get a plastic identification card indicating that they served in the military. Before the ID cards, vets would be required to show their DD214 paperwork and state-issued identification or driver’s license to take advantage of services for veterans, including government programs and store discounts.

When Michael Murray and his son Michael go to the Humane Society each week, the doggies who are up for adoption wag their tales in anticipation. The Murrays are volunteer dog-walkers, a job that helps out the adoption agency and is a lot of fun for the father-son team.

The speaker will be Deborah Olson, executive director of the Center for Community Based Enterprise in Detroit. She’ll be talking partly about the history of cooperatives, and partly about the nuts and bolts of setting up a cooperative and making it successful.

Last week, Attorney Lisa J. Schmidt of Schmidt Law Services, PLLC, presented Straight Talk on Medical Marijuana Laws at the Ferndale Public Library. In that talk she discussed recent proposals by both legislators and the public to modify the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act and the effects these modifications may have on the ability of qualified patients to use the drug

“Registration is $32 which partially goes back to Ferncare. Our goal this year is to raise $1,000. If each of us can raise at least $100 we should make our goal! I hope to have more registered runners this year so we can surpass our goal,” Music said.

These days, even though O’Donnell recently celebrated his 80th birthday, he shows no signs of slowing down. For fun, he likes to garden and one of the things he likes most is being treasurer of the Boston Terrier Club of Detroit. “Musetta has already won her championship,” he chuckled. “She is a retired volunteer just like me.”

Friends of the Ferndale Library and The Society of Sant Jordi invite the public to enjoy a full day of cultural festivities. Admission is $5 and includes a complimentary rose and used book from the Friends of Ferndale Library bookstore. Kids 12 and under are free. Proceeds from the event will go directly to the Library for community programs.

The Ferndale Environmental Sustainability Commission and the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority are combining efforts with that of the local business community to host the 4th annual Ferndale Green Week. The week of events are an opportunity for residents to not only celebrate Earth Day 2012 but also get to know some local businesses that are doing their part to help celebrate the earth year-round.

If Miriam Gershow made a bumper sticker it would say “Fiction Saves Lives.” The Berkley High graduate is the author of The Local News, a story about a teenager whose older brother went missing and how it affected her and her family. Gershow, who now lives in Oregon, came back to Michigan to do a reading from the novel at The Ferndale Public Library as part of their Ferndale Reads celebration.

The painting—created as an illustration for The Story of Hiawatha–is gouache on illustration board. Room was left in the lower right corner for text, which was written by Allen Chaffee as a retelling of the famous Longfellow poem. Published in 1951, The Story of Hiawatha features Sperry’s illustrations throughout and is currently out of print, though two copies remain in circulation at the Ferndale Public Library.

It was one of those rare warm days this March that over 50 professional photographers from around Michigan descended on the alley of the Withington Parking Lot for a very special seminar. Blair Phillips, a nationally-recognized photographer for seniors and weddings was in town for the day-long lesson in urban photography.

The tour starts out in the education center, where youngsters hear a presentation about recycling, and watch a video about the process. Karen Bever, from SOCRRA explained that the more kids recycle, the more money the cities get back from the program. “It costs cities $26 a ton to take away garbage, but for every ton of recycling the city brings in they get a $37.50 credit,” Bever said.

Judy Smith’s third grade class got a special visit vis Skype on March 22, 2012. Corey Reynolds, who plays Sgt. David Gabriel in the TNT Series The Closer, did his part to help encourage reading by introducing the youngsters to the Choose Your Own Adventure series.
