The painting—created as an illustration for The Story of Hiawatha–is gouache on illustration board. Room was left in the lower right corner for text, which was written by Allen Chaffee as a retelling of the famous Longfellow poem. Published in 1951, The Story of Hiawatha features Sperry’s illustrations throughout and is currently out of print, though two copies remain in circulation at the Ferndale Public Library.

It was one of those rare warm days this March that over 50 professional photographers from around Michigan descended on the alley of the Withington Parking Lot for a very special seminar. Blair Phillips, a nationally-recognized photographer for seniors and weddings was in town for the day-long lesson in urban photography.

Street Eats Wednesday was an experimental event held on March 21, 2012 in the alley behind Rust Belt Market. Mobile vendors such as Jacques Tacos, Treat Dreams, and El Guapo Grill came out to serve the thousands of people who came out to the food truck rally.

Judy Smith’s third grade class got a special visit vis Skype on March 22, 2012. Corey Reynolds, who plays Sgt. David Gabriel in the TNT Series The Closer, did his part to help encourage reading by introducing the youngsters to the Choose Your Own Adventure series.

David Petersen is the award winning creator of the Mouse Guard series out with Archaia Entertainment. In 2007 David won the Russ Manning Award For Most Promising Newcomer and since then has continued to revitalize the fantasy genre in comics. As both the writer and artist for Mouse Guard, David approaches creating comics from every possible direction.

You might also recognize Zureich from seeing her on stage. One of her passions is improvisational comedy, and she’s part of the family at Go! Comedy at 261 9 Mile. “I think everybody should do improv. The principles it teaches work in other areas of life. The relationships you build with people on stage will be like none you will ever have again. It’s nice to just fully trust someone to have your back.”
