City Releases Video to Help People Learn the New Parking System

The City of Ferndale has released a video to teach people how to use the multi-space parking meters which are expected to be back online March 25. There is currently free parking in Ferndale through March 24 due to unanticipated problems with the system and complaints about the rates and long lines.
After that enforcement will only be done until 8pm for a trial length of time through May 1st, so that the City can work on lighting issues at the meters.
City’s Chief Innovation Officer (CINO), Joe Gacioch stars in the You Tube video. In it he explains that the new multi-space meters have a screen that lights up when patrons touch it. Patrons must remember their four-digit code to punch into the machines, which are named “Luke.”
Luke accepts bills, change and credit cards. Those who pay with credit cards can also enter their 
phone number to have reminders sent to their phone with the option of renewing by phone.
Patrons can avoid using Luke if they would prefer to use the Parkmobile system, which is done through a cell phone app and has an additional service charge.
Spaces are marked with the four-digit Park Plus numbers, as well as the Parkmobile numbers and instructions.
The video incorrectly gives the parking rate as $1 per hour. City Council recently lowered the rate back to its original fifty cents per hour after numerous complaints from residents, visitors and business owners. The DDA Board recommended the rate decrease, although it is likely that the rate will be reconsidered by council once a more comprehensive plan is in place to alleviate parking problems in Downtown Ferndale.
