FHS Mourns Loss of Standout Student

(C. Proxmire, March 15, 2013)

The Ferndale community is mourning the loss of a standout student and athlete.

Ferndale Schools issued the following release about the young man’s death:

“A Ferndale High School student died on March 14 after collapsing at school following a training practice with the track team. Mario Campbell, age 16, was a junior.

‘Grief counselors were at the high school on Friday morning to support students and staff. The district’s counseling and social work staff were also asked to start their day at FHS.

‘Lisa Williams, Principal of Ferndale High School, said, “We appreciate the strong support we’ve already received from our school family to help each other and our student’s family and friends through this sad time.” Williams said: “Mario was a wonderful student, enthusiastic learner, team player and dedicated friend. He always had a smile on his face and a good word to share. We will cherish his memory forever.”

‘Shaun Butler, FHS Athletic Director said, “This young man was a hard-working, dedicated and determined student athlete. He made dramatic improvements in his 400 time last year, and had set his goal to be the top hurdler this season. Mario was quiet, positive, well liked and respected. We will really miss him.”

Ferndale School Board President Jim O’Donnell added in an interview, “We’re very saddened by the student’s death and everyone on the school board joins me in doing everything we can to comfort the students and staff.  I understand that he was a good student, making honor roll and well liked.  I know it will hit everyone hard.”

O’Donnell confirmed that counselors from Common Ground are at the school today and for as long as needed to help students and staff with this loss.  Counselors and social workers from the district are also providing support.

Community members are working to put together fundraisers and memorials to help the family.  Information will be posted as it becomes available.   If anyone would like to share personal memories about Mario, we are happy to honor him by adding them to this story.  Please email editor@ferndale115.com.

A PaySchools account has been established by Ferndale High School for anyone who would like to make donations to support Mario’s family with funeral expenses.  The link is: http://www.payschools.com/cat.asp?id=744268CA18A345E698A4A94FC6DCC1A1
