Students from the University High School DECA program are asking that people bring a pair of jeans with them to the Extravaganza on Saturday, Jan. 26, to be donated to homeless youth.
The jeans collection is part of the Teens for Jeans movement organized through www.dosomething.org in partnership with clothing retailer Aeropostale. People who bring a pair of gently used jeans to donate not only can feel good about helping homeless youth, they will also get a 25% off coupon for their next Aeropostale purchase.
Elizabeth Watson, who is the UHS DECA Advisor and a marketing teacher at the school, is helping students with the drive.
Watson founded the University High School DECA Chapter in 2005. “Over the past 7 years we have had an average of 100 members each year. These students volunteer for community service, compete at the District, State, and National level, participate in fundraisers, and team building activities,” Watson said. “Our Chapter has even had a State Delegate, Brandon Wendell that served as Vice President of Public Relations for the 2011-2012 school year.
“Along with our Teens for Jeans project, our chapter does multiple fundraisers for MDA but our biggest is the MDA walk at Ford Field in March. Ashley Thompson and Asia Thompson are doing an Advertising Campaign for the Cupcake Station in Ferndale. Jazmen Nelson is working on an Entrepreneurship Project where she is creating a Jazz Club, A Night in Harlem. Natalie Elliott, Azurae Chalk, and Kayla Collins are working on a Community Service Project called Speak Up or Stand Up dealing with domestic abuse. And Diamond Hansel-
Collins and Kayla Moore are also doing a Community Service Project, A Heart to Call Home, dealing with foster care. All of our projects will be on display at the All-City Extravaganza”.
In regards to the Teens for Jeans collection, Watson said “Our DECA President Teneyah Duff and Vice President Kiara Cutts felt that our chapter should get involved and give back to other teenagers that are in need.”
