(Lisa Schmidt press release, Jan. 13, 2013)
Attorney Lisa J. Schmidt of Schmidt Law Services, PLLC, will present a free one-hour talk on the issue of marriage equality vs. the traditional definition of marriage and the upcoming Supreme Court cases at the Ferndale Public Library on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.
In her 9th Straight Talk on Laws That Affect Your Life, Lisa J. Schmidt will cover the controversial topic of gay marriage. Previous talks have covered everything from anti-bullying laws to medical marijuana. The talks feature a balanced and informational perspective on different legal topics important to the community. This talk, which is scheduled for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, will look at this next big movement in civil rights policy.
According to Schmidt, “The timing of the Supreme Court’s decision to hear these cases just months after 4 states’ voters spoke out in favor of marriage equality is anything but accidental. The Court is ready to make a big decision that will have significant and lasting effects, no matter which way it goes.”
Schmidt is a trial lawyer whose firm Schmidt Law Services, PLLC, focuses on civil rights, family law, and criminal defense issues. When asked why she chose this topic she said, “This is a big deal to many Ferndale residents. For some, it could change the entire direction of their lives. It’s important for the community to know what to look for in the coming months when the Court makes its decision.”
Schmidt will give the hour-long talk on January 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ferndale Public Library, which will include an opportunity for questions. The talk is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice.
Future Straight Talks are scheduled the third Monday of every month through May. All talks will be at 7:00pm at the Ferndale Public Library. February’s topic will be gun control laws.
There is no charge to attend. For more information on Straight Talk on the Law or Schmidt Law Services, PLLC, please contact Lisa J. Schmidt or visit www.schmidtlawservices.com.
