This month’s Charity is Ferndale Soup. The premise of Ferndale Soup is simple. On the third Sunday of each month, a bunch of people get together and each pay $5 to enjoy some soup (and other delicious food) and listen to presentations about projects that people would like to start. Then they vote on which project gets to take home the funding.

The store was very busy while the incident occurred and the man was able to walk out of the store without being noticed and never returned. The owner arrived at the store later and was suspicious of the inspection and attempted to contact the Ferndale Fire Department; however, both the fire marshal and Chief were not available.

Forget everything you know about 175 W. Troy Street. The old Rosie’s is gone. Cantina Diablo’s is gone. And with cool gray walls, DIA-exhibited reclaimed art, English pub style tables, 44 available beers, and a menu touting oysters, Sweaty Bettys, and bacon with a side of bacon, the newly opened One-Eyed Betty’s is nothing like Ferndale has seen before.

According to a Press Release by L. Brooks Patterson, the Ingham County Circuit Court has ruled against Public Act 280 of 2011 which reduces the number of Oakland County commissioners to 21 from 25 and allows the elected commissioners to draw the new county commission districts. The Act was signed by Governor Snyder, but Oakland County Democrats quickly sued to stop it’s implementation.

Curator and artist Alvita Lozano put together the exhibit as a fundraiser for the FernCare Free Health Clinic which opened its official location in Ferndale last year.

For the Feb. 12, 2012 forum on the school bond, Citizens for Quality Education Treasurer Bob Borkram discussed why he thinks people should vote for the school bond. Resident and occasional political candidate Tom Gagne spoke against the bond.

I wanted to come up with something to inspire our members while giving them something they could all get behind. I read a book of ideas on how to get members to help recruit. One of the ideas mentioned having one of your leaders offer to do something extreme if you met the stated goal.

Carol Czechowski of the Herb Society of America gave a whimsical presentation about the connections between fairies and gardens. Weaving traditional lore with practical gardening suggestions, Czechowski had the audience of plant connoisseurs making big plans about little things.

The Bud Light Ferndale Blues and Music Festival took place January 27 to February 4, 2012 with record turnout at over 20 venues. The money raised goes towards Michigan AIDS Coalition and Ferndale Youth Assistance.

The Democrat’s rouge address and Patterson’s official one give wildly different views of Oakland County and the quality of life residents experience. Patterson’s speech painted a positive picture of a thriving Oakland County.
On 2/13/12 at 0052 hours a Ferndale Officer was patrolling west on W Eight Mile passing Laprairie when he saw a black Jeep Liberty approaching Eight Mile. The City of Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge are one step closer to continuing shared fire services. The City of Ferndale will be bringing forward a request to approve a contract with Pleasant Ridge for a continuation of the current agreement to provide fire protection and ambulance service at the Ferndale City Council meeting on Monday, February 13, 2012 and Pleasant Ridge will follow the day after on Tuesday, February 14 at their commission meeting.
On February 28, 2012 voters in the Ferndale School District will be asked to vote on a School Bond. There are still opportunities to come out and talk with neighbors about the issue.
Chapp is a member of Citizens for Fair Ferndale, an organization with a rich history of social justice and fairness-related work. At a recent get together, CFF members discussed their perspectives of fairness in the city, what they have accomplished so far, and where they might want to head.
In less than a month, Huntington Bank at 306 W. 9 Mile was robbed for the second time yesterday. The robbery occurred at about 4:40 p.m. when the same person who robbed the bank on January 13th presented a teller with a note demanding money. The teller gave the man some cash and he left through the back door into the Withington parking lot.
The report for the weekend is that Ferndale was generally quiet, but for more drunk driving arrests than usual. From the early morning hours of Saturday morning until 12:55 this morning, Ferndale Police arrested 8 people for drunk driving. Two of the arrests were for Felony Drunk driving. Both felony arrestees had extremely high blood alcohol levels and extensive driving records.
The Fifth Annual Rib Burn Off was a sizzling success, serving a record-breaking 848 people over 1,500 lbs of ribs all in the name of charity! The Rib Burn Off is part of the Ferndale Blues and Music Festival, which raises money for Michigan AIDS Coalition and Ferndale Youth Assistance.

I heard a lot of great music that night, and it amazed me how good they were. I saw them again and then I picked up on other local music that I liked. I thought, hey, I like these songs a lot better than any national band. So I found a way to make it fit with library stuff.”
The FABulous Night of Entertainment includes performance by Go Comedy, Jere Storner and Friends, Funk Yeah (featuring FHS alumni) and other student performers. This is the third year they've held this fabulous event.

These are the most challenging two weeks of the year for Pastor Bob Luxon and his crew of volunteers at Renaissance Vineyard Church (1841 Pinecrest, formerly The First Baptist of Ferndale). For the first two weeks in January they host over 100 homeless guests a night, keeping them safe from winter weather, as part of South Oakland Warming Shelter.

Michigan’s lawmakers have amended the State’s Election Law to require a statewide presidential primary election on February 28, 2012. The Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit is ready to move forward with the appointment of Interim Pastor Rev. Jim Lynch. The 63 year-old Lynch has served as interim pastor for other congregations and has worked in Michigan, Florida and Illinois to make sure that MCC churches have strong transitional leadership.

The volunteer team will be able to respond to major disasters, and also to help out the fire department in other ways such as first aid support at events and helping to secure the area around downed power lines.
The Jan. 9, 2012 Ferndale City Council meeting was packed with those wanting to see their elected officials get sworn in from their victories in November. Mayor Dave Coulter, who had been appointed by City Council for a partial first term when former Mayor Craig Covey was elected to County Commissioner, had his second swearing in by The Honorable Judge Joseph Longo.
After months of deliberating, Project Coordinator Darlene Hellenberg has finally settled on the gripping tale of a missing boy told through the eyes of his teenage sister. “I wanted a book with a strong female lead,” says Hellenberg. “Lydia is definitely a compelling character. The fact that the story is set in Michigan is an added bonus.”

Royal Oak Family Dentistry is hosting a Give Kids a Smile event on Feb. 11, 2012 in partnership with the American dental Association. Youngsters aged 3-17 can have their teeth checked up, cleaned and possibly some restorative work at no cost.
“If I don’t stand up for my God-given right, by any means necessary, then I can’t expect someone else to stand up for me,” Darlene Franklin said to the packed community room at Affirmations community center. “You need gay people to stand up in their own churches and say ‘no more.’”
One of the two has been released pending further investigation. Another remains in custody and is suspected of being the gunman in the incident.
The Bud Light Ferndale Blues & Music Festival will be bigger and better this year, and one show will trump them all in terms of the sheer volume of musical talent in one place. The Bridge Project and the Grosse Pointe Jazz Band, each with over 15 members, will showcase big band jazz at its finest at the Ferndale Elks Club (22856 Woodward Ave) on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 from 7-9 pm as part of the City-wide festival.
On January 21, 2012, Ferndale had it's first beautiful sunny day with snow on the ground this year. Neighbors came together at the hill at Martin Road Park for some good old fashioned sledding. Here are some pictures.

Surveillance photos show that the same person who robbed the Huntington Bank on Jan. 13th also attempted to rob the CVS at 900 West 9 Mile and Pinecrest on November. Attached are the best photos I have, from each robbery.
DTE Crews are on the scene at E. 9 Mile and Hilton where a downed wire has knocked out power to approximately 1713 customers. Crews are working quickly to get power turned back on as quickly as possible, but an official estimate has not been obtained. (ie, after half an hour of getting nowhere on DTE’s website or phone line we gave up. Seriously though, it looks like they’ve got it under control.)
The Ferndale Blues and Music Festival gives the community a chance to have fun and get introduced to multiple bars, restaurants and gathering places, while still raising money for charity. Michigan AIDS Coalition and Ferndale Youth Assistance benefit from this annual event. George Feld is another FYA Board Member, serving as the group’s Treasurer. “In the early 90’s I was Accounting Supervisor for the Schools and the Superintendent asked me to get involved. I retired in 2003, but I still do the accounting for FYA as my way of giving back,” Feld said.

Workers were evacuated from a business on Hilton on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 when fumes alerted them to a hazardous chemical leak in the adjacent building. Work at the factory was stopped for the day while the neighbor’s chemical spill was cleaned up, though workers were permitted to go inside to retrieve their belongings once the scene was secure.
But more likely anyone who looks at the work will come up with their own interpretation. That’s what makes Stanton’s painting so engaging. They aren’t just windows into his own soul, they’re invitations for the viewer to open up their own and maybe let their inner child come out and play for a bit.
