This month’s Charity is Ferndale Soup. The premise of Ferndale Soup is simple. On the third Sunday of each month, a bunch of people get together and each pay $5 to enjoy some soup (and other delicious food) and listen to presentations about projects that people would like to start. On 2/13/12 at 0052 hours a Ferndale Officer was patrolling west on W Eight Mile passing Laprairie when he saw a black Jeep Liberty approaching Eight Mile. The City of Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge are one step closer to continuing shared fire services. The City of Ferndale will be bringing forward a request to approve a contract with Pleasant Ridge for a continuation of the current agreement to provide fire protection and ambulance service at the Ferndale City Council meeting on Monday, February 13, 2012 and Pleasant Ridge will follow the day after on Tuesday, February 14 at their commission meeting.

On February 28, 2012 voters in the Ferndale School District will be asked to vote on a School Bond. There are still opportunities to come out and talk with neighbors about the issue.

In less than a month, Huntington Bank at 306 W. 9 Mile was robbed for the second time yesterday. The robbery occurred at about 4:40 p.m. when the same person who robbed the bank on January 13th presented a teller with a note demanding money. The teller gave the man some cash and he left through the back door into the Withington parking lot.

The report for the weekend is that Ferndale was generally quiet, but for more drunk driving arrests than usual. From the early morning hours of Saturday morning until 12:55 this morning, Ferndale Police arrested 8 people for drunk driving. Two of the arrests were for Felony Drunk driving. Both felony arrestees had extremely high blood alcohol levels and extensive driving records.

The Fifth Annual Rib Burn Off was a sizzling success, serving a record-breaking 848 people over 1,500 lbs of ribs all in the name of charity! The Rib Burn Off is part of the Ferndale Blues and Music Festival, which raises money for Michigan AIDS Coalition and Ferndale Youth Assistance.

These are the most challenging two weeks of the year for Pastor Bob Luxon and his crew of volunteers at Renaissance Vineyard Church (1841 Pinecrest, formerly The First Baptist of Ferndale). For the first two weeks in January they host over 100 homeless guests a night, keeping them safe from winter weather, as part of South Oakland Warming Shelter.

Michigan’s lawmakers have amended the State’s Election Law to require a statewide presidential primary election on February 28, 2012. The law calls for separate ballots to be printed for Republican candidates and for Democratic candidates, just as was done in January 2008.

After months of deliberating, Project Coordinator Darlene Hellenberg has finally settled on the gripping tale of a missing boy told through the eyes of his teenage sister. “I wanted a book with a strong female lead,” says Hellenberg. “Lydia is definitely a compelling character. The Bridge Project and the Grosse Pointe Jazz Band, each with over 15 members, will showcase big band jazz at its finest at the Ferndale Elks Club (22856 Woodward Ave) on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 from 7-9 pm as part of the City-wide festival.

Here’s how it works: People go to the big tent set up in the parking lot between Dino’s and the Library, pay $10, and sample ribs from eight different teams. Then they vote on which they like the best. The money raised goes to support the Michigan AIDS Coalition and the Ferndale Youth Assistance. The Burn Out takes place Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 starting at noon and rocking on past sunset.

Surveillance photos show that the same person who robbed the Huntington Bank on Jan. 13th also attempted to rob the CVS at 900 West 9 Mile and Pinecrest on November. Attached are the best photos I have, from each robbery.

DTE Crews are on the scene at E. 9 Mile and Hilton where a downed wire has knocked out power to approximately 1713 customers. Crews are working quickly to get power turned back on as quickly as possible, but an official estimate has not been obtained. (ie, after half an hour of getting nowhere on DTE’s website or phone line we gave up. Seriously though, it looks like they’ve got it under control.)

Workers were evacuated from a business on Hilton on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 when fumes alerted them to a hazardous chemical leak in the adjacent building. Work at the factory was stopped for the day while the neighbor’s chemical spill was cleaned up, though workers were permitted to go inside to retrieve their belongings once the scene was secure.
